Computer Science Engages Students
Students are more adept in technology than ever before, and they’ve grown up with the capabilities to get immediate feedback in nearly everything they do. Computer science is an excellent way to build problem solving skills, foster creativity, and reinforce the lessons you teach in your curriculum. Coding and robotics actively engages students in the learning process by providing immediate feedback to learn what works, and what doesn’t work, to understand a subject and apply lessons in a fun way.
Computer science is also best when it’s hands on. Students must become the teacher to instruct a computer or robot to carry out commands. You can help build the structure for students to learn and provide instructions to solve a wide range of challenges.
You’re Already Teaching CS, We Just Gave It a Name
At the core of computer science is the practice of computational thinking. It’s defined as a way to break down large complex problems so they’re easier to solve and simpler to give a computer instructions. You’re already teaching problem solving in a variety of ways, and you’ll find that you’re already teaching the core aspects of computational thinking:
- Decomposition: break down a large problem into smaller, more manageable problems
- Patterns: identify any sequence or task that is repeating itself
- Abstraction: take away specific details to make a more general, universal solution
- Algorithm: identify a step-by-step sequence to solve a problem or accomplish a task.

Secure Professional Development for Your Teachers
One of the first hurdles to overcome is inexperience in computer science. Providing accessible resources to build confidence to lead CS instruction in classrooms is a simple solution.
We offer two key methods to introduce teachers to computer science and computational thinking and start engaging students in the classroom. You can set up in-person professional development sessions at your schools or secure online course registrations for teachers at your organizations.
